KINGPOP the art of Ryan Villiers

Artwork that was

Non-Fungible before it was cool.

Since the early 1990’s, KingPop has been a pioneer in creating art as an ownable digital asset by establishing the concept of his “Digital Original” art pieces – many of which are now available as non-fungible tokens.

Oh, but there's art. Isn't that why we're here?

One last thing...

...And then there's this guy (or every a-hole has an origin story)

“LEARN TO DRAW!”

It was what the matchbooks of my childhood would scream at me.  Learn to draw.  Master these simple characters and you can be a professional artist.

Or an outcast.

Artists usually are; lost in a world that often only makes sense to us.

And that’s what I paint.  A dark milieau that scratches at the underbelly of humanity all wrapped in a thin candy shell.

Okay, so why “KingPop”?  It sounds pretentious.

Yeah, it’s dumb, really.

The first art I ever got paid to create was drawing scenes from popular anime series like Robotech, Akira, and Cowboy Beebop.  The client – a slick-talking manga-bro – would slur together an amalgam of his favorite titles:  Aki-bops… Keebop… KingPop.

I’m sure alcohol was also involved.

Around the same time, my work was getting noticed by galleries and collectors, yet I’d often find that my [real] name would be misspelled at shows.  The nickname proved to be more accessible and just sort of stuck.

Seriously, are you really reading this?  Did you even notice that the last bit was lorem ipsum?  If you’ve made it this far, you must be interested that my art has shown in galleries world and has been featured in publications including Juxtapoz, Maxim, and the New York Times.   Maybe you’d like to know that..  Perhaps you’re just trying to tell me that…
